Family portrait session in Hertfordshire with young children — Olivia Christina Photography

There is a moment, and if you have young children, you will know the one I mean, where you look at them and think: I need to remember this. Not the tidy version. Not the school photo with the forced smile and the stiff collar. This. Right now. The way they run. The sound of their laugh. The particular way they reach for your hand without even thinking about it.

That feeling is the reason family portrait photography exists. And it is the reason I want to talk to you today, if you have toddlers or pre-schoolers at home and you have been meaning to book a session but haven’t quite got round to it yet.

This is your gentle nudge.

The Years That Pass Before You Have Time to Notice

When your children are small, the days feel long. You are in the thick of it, the school runs, the tantrums, the bath times, the bedtime negotiations that somehow take forty-five minutes. You are tired in a way that is hard to describe to anyone who hasn’t lived it.

And then you blink, and they are taller. Their hands are different. The way they speak has changed. The little phrases they used to say the mispronunciations you secretly loved, the questions they asked about everything have quietly disappeared, replaced by something older.

This is not a sad thing. It is a beautiful thing. But it is also the reason that families across Hertfordshire come to me every year and say the same thing: “I wish we had done this sooner.”

They are not talking about the photographs. They are talking about having something to hold on to. Evidence of a chapter of life that moved so fast they barely saw it happening.

Why Professional Family Photography in Hertfordshire Is Different

I understand the hesitation. You have a phone. You take hundreds of photos a week. What could a professional family photographer in Hertfordshire offer that you cannot capture yourself?

Here is the honest answer: the same thing a professional offers in any craft. Skill, intention, and a perspective you cannot have when you are also in the picture.

When I photograph your family, I am watching for things you might not even notice in the moment. The way your youngest leans into your leg when they are tired. The look your toddler gives their sibling just before they dissolve into giggles. The split second when everyone is relaxed and real and entirely themselves.

I am also there to make it easy. Family sessions with young children are not stiff or posed. They are warm, playful, and led by your children’s energy on the day. We move at their pace. If someone needs a snack break, we take one. If someone decides they would rather chase a leaf than stand still, we follow them. The best family portraits I have ever made have come from exactly those unplanned moments.

  • No posing that feels unnatural or uncomfortable.

  • No pressure on your children to perform or behave perfectly.

  • A session that feels more like a relaxed family outing than a photoshoot.

  • Images that show your family as you actually are — not a curated version of yourselves.

The Question I Am Asked Most Often

“When is the right time to book a family portrait session?”

The answer I always give is the same: now. Not because I want the booking — but because there is genuinely no version of “now” that is wrong.

Your toddler will not be a toddler for long. Your pre-schooler is on the edge of becoming a school child, and that shift changes everything — their face, their confidence, their independence. The sibling dynamic you have right now, between this baby and this older child, in this particular season of your family’s life — it exists only once.

Families across Hertfordshire often wait until there is a special occasion. A birthday. An anniversary. A time when the children are “old enough to behave.” But the truth is that there does not need to be a reason. The ordinary Tuesday of your family’s life right now is worth documenting. Maybe especially because it feels ordinary.

Where I Photograph Families in Hertfordshire

My studio is based at Brickendonbury Estate in Hertford — a stunning country house estate that provides a beautiful backdrop for both indoor and outdoor family sessions. The grounds offer natural light, open space, and enough room for even the most energetic toddler to run freely while I capture everything.

I also photograph families at outdoor locations across Hertfordshire — woodland settings, open countryside, and other natural environments that suit your family’s personality. If you have a favourite local spot that means something to you, I am always open to a conversation about shooting there.

Every session is tailored. Because no two families are the same, and your photographs should feel yours entirely.

What Happens After Your Session

Once your session is complete, I edit every image with the same care and attention I give to every photograph I make. You will receive a beautiful gallery of your favourite images, delivered within a few weeks of your session.

From there, you can choose prints, wall art, albums, or digital files, whatever fits your home and your life. I am always happy to guide you through the options, particularly if you are thinking about wall art and are not sure where to start.

What I can tell you, from thirteen years of doing this, is that the families who invest in printed images, photographs on their walls, albums on their shelves, are the ones who come back to me time and again. Because they live with those images every day. And every day, they are glad they have them.

A Note to the Parent Who Is on the Fence

If you have been thinking about booking a family portrait session in Hertfordshire and have not quite talked yourself into it yet, I want to say this gently but directly.

The version of your family that exists right now will not exist in another year. Your children’s faces will change. Their relationship with each other will evolve. You will all be in a slightly different chapter of life.

You do not get these years back. But you can have something that holds them.

That is what I do. That is what family photography is for. And I would genuinely love to do it for your family.
