If you are currently pregnant and wondering whether to book a newborn photography session, this post is written for you. Not to sell you something — but to give you the honest, considered answer that I wish someone had given me when I first started doing this work over a decade ago.
The question I am asked more than any other, by expectant mothers all over Hertfordshire and beyond, is some version of this: “Is it really worth it?”
Here is my answer.
The First Ten Days Are Gone in a Blink
I have been a newborn photographer for over thirteen years. I have photographed hundreds of babies in my studio at Brickendonbury Estate in Hertford, and without exception, every single parent has said the same thing when they see their gallery for the first time. “They were so tiny. I had already forgotten how tiny.”
This is not a cliché. It is biology. The newborn phase is so overwhelming, so sleep-deprived, so all-consuming that the brain does not retain the detail the way we expect it to. The weight of them in your arms, the curl of their fingers, the particular way they tuck their knees up, these things fade far faster than any of us wants to believe.

Professional newborn photography exists to hold those details still. Not for Instagram. Not to impress anyone. For you. For them. For twenty years from now, when your child is taller than you and you want to remember the very first week of their life.
What Does Newborn Photography Actually Cost in Hertfordshire?
I will be straightforward with you, because I think you deserve that. Professional newborn photography in Hertfordshire is an investment. You will find cheaper options, and you will also find photographers who have been awarded nationally for their work, who operate from a purpose-built studio, and who have photographed over a thousand newborns safely and beautifully. These are not the same thing.
What you are paying for when you book an award-winning newborn photographer is not just photographs. It is:
A photographer who knows newborn safety inside out — every pose, every prop, every hold is handled with expertise built over years.
An entirely unhurried session, we work at your baby's pace, not a clock.
A warm, calm studio environment that your baby will settle into naturally.
Editing and artistry that produce images you will genuinely want on your walls for decades.
An experience that you, as a new mother, will feel held and cared for throughout.
The images you receive are not a product. They are a permanent record of something that will never exist again.
But I Can Just Take Photos on My Phone, Can't I?

Of course you can. And you should — please do. Phone photos capture the chaos and the love and the reality of those early days, and they are precious for exactly that reason.
But there is a difference between a snapshot and an image made with intention. Professional newborn photography in Hertfordshire, done well, creates something that a phone simply cannot: a deliberate, considered, beautiful record of your baby at their most fleeting.
The lighting. The composition. The way a skilled photographer reads your baby's sleepy cues and works with them rather than against them. The wraps and textures chosen complement rather than distract. These are not small things. They are the difference between an image you scroll past and one that stops you completely.
What My Clients Actually Say
I have been fortunate enough to win over twenty-six photography awards. I am proud of those. But the thing I return to most often is not an award — it is the messages I receive from clients six months, a year, two years after their session.
They say things like: “I look at those images every single day.” And: “I cannot imagine not having them.” And, most often: “I nearly didn’t book, and I am so glad I did.”
Nobody has ever written to me to say they regret booking. In thirteen years, not once.
I have had clients tell me they regret not booking. That is a harder message to receive.
When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer in Hertfordshire?
The ideal time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester — around 20 to 28 weeks pregnant. This is not because I want your money early. It is because newborn photography is best done in the first 5 to 14 days of your baby's life, when they are still curled and sleepy and settle most easily into poses.
If you wait until your baby arrives to start looking, the dates you need are often already taken.
Booking in pregnancy also gives you something to look forward to in those final weeks — and it means that when your baby arrives, all you have to do is message me with their birth date. Everything else is already arranged.
Is Newborn Photography Worth It? My Honest Answer
If you are asking whether it fits neatly into a budget that is already stretched by a new baby, that is a personal decision only you can make, and I would never tell you otherwise.
But if you are asking whether the images themselves, and the experience of creating them, have genuine and lasting value, my answer, after thirteen years and hundreds of sessions, is yes. Without hesitation.
These photographs will outlive you. They will be shown to grandchildren. They will be the thing you reach for when you want to remember who your child was in their very first days on earth.
That is not a small thing. That is everything.
